BIS came into force on 23 December 1986 and was established by the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986. It is the national standards body of India engaged in the preparation and implementation of standards, certification schemes for products and systems, testing and calibration services, etc.
BIS is headquartered in New Delhi and has 5 main regional offices located at Mumbai, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Chennai and Delhi.
Smt. Alka Panda was Director-General of BIS till 2015. The main objectives of BIS are to promote standardization and quality control, harmonize the development of standards related to marking and quality certification, develop a national strategy for recognition of standards and integrate them with the development of production and exports.
BIS covers product certification schemes, standard formulation, foreign manufacturer certification schemes, laboratory accreditation schemes, hallmarking schemes, product plans and consumer-related activities.
