What is NPI?
The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a U.S. provider of information provided by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. It is a 10-digit identification number issued to healthcare providers in the U.S. Your NPI will not change even if your address, taxonomy or name changes. Although each NPI is unique, it does not contain specific information about you, such as the state where you practice or your expertise.
NPIs are used in place of other provider identifiers. Like a Provider Transaction Access Number (PTAN), Online Survey Certification and Reporting (OSCAR), and National Supplier Clearinghouse (NSC) when used in HIPAA standard transactions. For context, HIPAA standard transactions are exchanges involving the transfer of health care data between two parties for specific purposes.
Who Needs An NPI Number?
Any healthcare provider, health care clearinghouse or healthcare organization that deals in transactions or uses health records that are covered under HIPPA rules will be required to obtain an NPI. They may be eligible for this.
This covers companies and providers who handle their claims via a medical billing business.
Notably, HIPPA requires that any individual, business or healthcare agency that transmits any patient health information electronically in connection with a transaction must have an NPI number.
Once a provider receives its NPI, it cannot be changed, as it is unique. and stays with them regardless of their situation or where they live or work.

You can apply for NPI through a web-based application. All you need to do is visit the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) website.
Individual providers have to create a username and password through an Identity and Access Management (I&A) system.

2. Apply Through a Mail Paper Application
You must complete a copy of the application (Form CMS-10114, “NPI Application/Update Form”) to obtain the NPI number at the NPI enumerator address listed in the form. And can sign and mail.
