Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) is India’s third generation launch vehicle. It is the first Indian launch vehicle to be equipped with the liquid stages. After its first successful launch in October 1994, PSLV emerged as India’s reliable and versatile workhorse launch vehicle with 39 consecutive missions as of June 2017. During the period 1994–2017, the vehicle has launched 48 Indian satellites and 209 satellites for customers from abroad. .

In addition, the vehicle successfully launched two spacecraft – Chandrayaan-1 in 2008 and Mars Orbiter Spacecraft in 2013 – later traveling to the Moon and Mars respectively.

It is India’s third generation launch vehicle and also India’s first liquid-phase satellite launch vehicle. PSLV was introduced to India to enable its satellites in sun-synchronous orbits for the IRS (Indian Remote Sensing). It can also be used to launch small-sized GTO (Geostationary Transfer Orbit) satellites.
